Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Ingredients : Makes one loaf |

Plain flour
Wholemeal flour
Bicarbonate of soda
Salt
Butter or margarine, at room temperature
Buttermilk
Plain flour, for dusting |
Method :
- Preheat the oven to 200oC/400oF/Gas

- Grease a baking sheet. Sift together
the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt.
- Make a central well and add the butter
or margarine and buttermilk. Working from the centre, stir to combine
the ingredients until a soft dough is formed.
- With floured hands, gather the dough
into a ball. Knead for 3 minutes. Shape the dough into a large round.
- Place on the baking sheet. Cut a cross
in the top with a sharp knife and dust with the flour.
- Bake until brown, about 40-50 minutes.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
