Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Ingredients : Makes one loaf

Plain flour

Wholemeal flour

Bicarbonate of soda


Butter or margarine, at room temperature


Plain flour, for dusting

Method :
  • Preheat the oven to 200oC/400oF/Gas 6.
  • Grease a baking sheet. Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt.
  • Make a central well and add the butter or margarine and buttermilk. Working from the centre, stir to combine the ingredients until a soft dough is formed.
  • With floured hands, gather the dough into a ball. Knead for 3 minutes. Shape the dough into a large round.
  • Place on the baking sheet. Cut a cross in the top with a sharp knife and dust with the flour.
  • Bake until brown, about 40-50 minutes.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
